Of use to someone other than me, maybe?

Feb. 19th, 2010 | 10:01 pm

I love Google Reader. I used to try to remember webcomics, then I bookmarked them, and now with RSS I'm quite happy.

That said, it doesn't deal with embedded images (Achewood) and of course doesn't deal with comics that don't include the image.

I've written some simple RSS proxies inspired by/copied from http://henrik.nyh.se/ and put them up for general use.

http://devalue.org/rss/ctrlaltdel.php - Ctrl-Alt-Del: expands both main comics and "sillies"

http://devalue.org/rss/sinfest.php - Sinfest

http://devalue.org/rss/somethingpositive.php - Something Positive (for various reasons, this won't always work.)

http://devalue.org/cgi-bin/achewood.py - Achewood: this also adds the alt text to the description.

The modified feed is cached for a minimum of 30 minutes.

This process is generally quite simple, so let me know if there's another comic RSS you'd like me to fix.

Prototyping that device I want to build

Feb. 16th, 2010 | 05:12 pm

The list of parts...Collapse )

...and that's actually it. I'm looking at other wireless options that could be more versatile, such as the WiFly, but it seems quite a bit more expensive and irrelevant to the task at hand.

I'm skipping over the external modules I want to build since they should be pretty trivial.

I'd like to build everything around something like Mrmr (http://code.google.com/p/mrmr) but quite a bit depends on the hardware. Looking forward to playing with Mrmr at Notacon though...

A device I want to build

This one's largely for pretentiousgit who was promised this ages ago.

The state of the problem...Collapse )

Next post: parts list for the prototype.

One of my favorite words.

MR. FRIEDMAN: I think that issue is entirely orthogonal to the issue here because the Commonwealth is acknowledging -
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: I’m sorry. Entirely what?
MR. FRIEDMAN: Orthogonal. Right angle. Unrelated. Irrelevant.
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Oh.
JUSTICE SCALIA: What was that adjective? I liked that.
MR. FRIEDMAN: Orthogonal.
CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Orthogonal.
MR. FRIEDMAN: Right, right.
JUSTICE SCALIA: Orthogonal, ooh.
(Laughter.)
JUSTICE KENNEDY: I knew this case presented us a problem.
(Laughter.)
MR. FRIEDMAN: I should have — I probably should have said -
JUSTICE SCALIA: I think we should use that in the opinion.
(Laughter.)
MR. FRIEDMAN: I thought — I thought I had seen it before.
JUSTICE SCALIA: Or the dissent.
(Laughter.)
MR. FRIEDMAN: That is a bit of professorship creeping in, I suppose.

Cross-posted from Twitter, kind of.

I have finally ported over my Boston number (which has been useless for a year and a half now, so I bet most of you deleted it.) Good news! If you've been using my Google Voice number, it still works and you don't have to update anything.

Feel free to delete my old 425-647-XXXX number.

DJ Hero

Oct. 31st, 2009 | 09:50 pm

If you really like Beatmania, mashups, or turntablism in general it's a great pickup. It's about 2-8x harder than Frequency or Amplitude comparing expert to expert, but that's a first impression.

There's very little Guitar Hero in the game (yay!) except for the mandatory trek through career mode to unlock things (boo!) --- 10 songs have guitar tracks that you can have a guitarist play along with.

Ergonomics on the controller leave a little to be desired. The crossfader has to be moved to various positions almost instantly --- you have to do punch fades manually as well --- there are no slow fades.

Scratching feels a little janky. The platter is nicely sized but you have to hold down one of the three buttons --- scratching with the inner button is a royal pain.

Overall pleased to own it but it's by no means a good party game or a keeper.

Perseus

Q: I had always wondered what had happened to Perseus SurveySolutions (the actual survey software, not the people, most of whom are on LJ :)

Cool LED tricks (and some vinyl)

Both of these would be extremely fun and useful projects. Hmm...

Exactly what I've been missing for kickass iPhone gaming.
